The City of Sydney will be retrofit its newly acquired TOTE building in Zetland.

The building was purchased for $1.6 million and will be retrofitted in 2011 with sustainability initiatives, including solar panels, water efficient appliances and rainwater tanks.

The building is likely to accommodate a temporary library link and community services centre with public computers and free wi-fi.

Zetland is part of the Green Square precinct, which is one of the largest urban development areas in Australia and once complete is expected to house 40,000 residents and 22,000 workers.

"Green Square is already growing rapidly and this temporary library link and customer service centre will play an important role in supporting this changing area until we can build a permanent library and multi-purpose community centre as part of the Town Centre development," Di Tornai says, City of Sydney councillor.

"The City is working closely with Landcom and the developer consortium Mirvac Projects/Leighton Properties to ensure the Town Centre is appropriately supported with a range of high quality community facilities.

"The Town Centre will be the major village centre for City South. Other facilities in Green Square will eventually include new parks, multi-purpose sporting fields, health and recreation centre featuring an aquatic centre, neighbourhood centre, shuttle buses, and landscaping. We continue to advocate vigorously for fairer ticket pricing on the Green Square rail link."
