Former BPN editor Rupert Posner has been appointed CEO of Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA), a group he says provides independent reassurance to avoid being taken in by greenwash.

“I’m excited to join Australia’s national ecolabelling program. The program makes it easier to choose products that are genuinely better for the environment,” said Posner.

“Consumer concern for making good environmental choices remains high despite difficult economic times and political disagreement about the best way to respond to climate change. Ecolabelling and independent certification helps assure consumers that their choices are effective.”

Big name brands continue to promote their environmental credentials. A recent study found more than 7000 different advertisements making green claims about a product, service or company.

Posner noted that “Many consumers are sceptical and confused about unsubstantiated green claims. Companies that make green claims may think they are doing the right thing, but only transparent, credible, third party validation will provide consumers with the confidence they need”.

“GECA’s ecolabel helps purchasers make decisions based on solid facts about the performance of products.”
GECA certification is only awarded to products that meet transparently developed and rigorous standards. Compliance with those standards is confirmed by accredited auditors independent of both the applicant company and GECA.

GECA Chair Gordon Renouf welcomed Posner’s appointment to the CEO role.

“I’m delighted to welcome Rupert as GECA’s CEO. He is a skilled leader, communications professional and sustainability advocate with considerable experience working directly with political and business leaders to achieve practical, financial and pro-environment results. His focus on sustainable solutions which are both effective and profitable will help GECA achieve outcomes for the environment by working with purchasers and suppliers to promote sustainable consumption and production.”

Posner successfully established and grew The Climate Group's revenue and presence in Australia over 6 years before taking up overseas roles with The Climate Group. The Climate Group is an international not-for-profit organisation working for an economically sustainable low carbon future.

Renouf acknowledged and thanked Judy Hollingworth, who stepped down as GECA CEO at the end of July 2012 for family reasons, and Martin Searle who has recently been acting CEO after a period as General Manager.
