Q: Describe the product — how does it work? What applications can it be used in?

A: A unique combination of properties makes aluminium one of the most versatile engineering and construction materials. Its lightweight mass, high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance under various service conditions make it an excellent material for the manufacturing of swaged bar grating.

All these attributes make aluminium grating an ideal product for a large range of applications. Due to its natural beauty, aluminium grating can be used in many architectural applications, including building façades, entranceways, material screens, fencing, fountains, stair treads, nature and wildlife walkways, security screens, mezzanine floors, platforms, ornamental grilles, parking deck perimeter wall façade, outdoor air access covers, trench grating and aluminium treads.

Q: What is the product made of?

A: Weldlok® Aluminium Grating is made when square cross bars are assembled through punched diamond shaped holes in rectangular load bars made of Alloy 6063-T6 and are permanently locked into place by a swaging process. The recessed cross bar provides clean, crisp lines and eliminates the need for any type of welding to form the panels. By using the most modern technology available, aluminium swaged bar grating allows for a variety of spacings. Slip resistant surfaces are also available.

Q: How is the product installed?

A: Before installation, all cutting and fitting required for installation should be completed. The grating is placed so that the cross-bars align. Where the grating is pierced by pipes, ducts and structural members, openings are cut neatly and accurately to size and a rectangular band bar of the same height and material as the load bars is welded to the opening unless a kick plate is required by AS1657.

Standard panel widths should be used wherever possible.

Q: How is the product fixed?

A: Weldlok® fixing clips (a special extruded aluminium or stainless steel clip, complete with SS316 bolts and nuts) are recommended to secure the grating to supporting members. A minimum of four clips should be used per panel or four per sqm. Where stainless steel fasteners are used, these will be isolated from the aluminium by Weldlok® nylon separation washers.

Q: Is the product enviromentally friendly? If so how?

A: Aluminium can be recycled and as a result makes it environmentally friendly. The significant scrap value of aluminium is one of the attributes that make it a cost effective alternative to other grating products. It is also non-toxic, so it can be easily cleaned and does not absorb bacteria sustaining particles.

Q: Does the product need any protective coating?

A: Where aluminium surfaces come into contact with other materials, such as dissimilar metals, concrete, masonry or lime mortar, exposed aluminium surfaces should be painted with one coat of bituminous paint or an approved isolating material.

Q: How long will the product last?

A: Aluminium is durable and will last for several years without showing wear or decay.

Q: What are the advantages of this product compared to similar products?

A: Weldlok® Aluminium Grating is strong, lightweight and low maintenance. It is naturally resistant to corrosion and will not rust. It is non-sparking, easy to install and requires little or no long term maintenance. The product has a more naturally attractive appearance than similar products and is a cost effective solution.
