Design Brief

The Barkla residence was an opportunity to transform an old style home in to a naturally warm and earthy space, reflecting the surrounding landscape.

The front of the house and entrance required an additional wow factor and to be complimented by a more interesting roof.

Changing and updating the windows would allow more natural light into the living areas while maximizing on the views to the east of the house.

The client’s wanted larger, open kitchen and living areas with higher ceilings and a balcony of the main living space. Bigger bedrooms were also desired and a private deck off the guest bedroom.

The budget was between $200000 - $250000.

Design Solution

Ashley Foote from Green Line Building Design has created a unique design, which he believes incorporates the modern times but will never date.

The transformation produced solar passive light filled rooms, surrounded by natural features of stone and timber, and much warmth.

The old tile roof was replaced with Colorbond and raising toplite roof sections and gables created interesting lines. This also allowed the amount of north facing glazing to be increased.

Rafters & roof beams from the de-construction of part of the roof were made into a dining table, coffee table and stools, while the existing external timber double doors from the meals area were reused in the guest bedroom.

New open raked ceilings with toplites and feature timber trusses were incorporated into the kitchen and rumpus room.

The windows & doors were upgraded with large pane, double glazed hardwood timber, while a fully glazed entry featuring a timber door and stonework helped tie the inside with the outside.

The existing kitchen was retained, enhanced by stonework & timber cabinetwork.

A number of areas were reconfigured to increase the size of the main bedroom and guest room and to incorporate an ensuite and walk-in-robe.

The main emphasis of Green Line Building Design was to allow the impact on the environment to be minimal, incorporate the infrastructure and cater for the ever increasing modern designs but still allowing nature’s elements to be the grandest features.
