The 530 Collins Street office tower will undergo an upgrade, bringing it up to a 5 star NABERS Energy rated building.

The building iscurrently operating on one of Melbourne’s few onsite co-generation plants - a high efficiency, low carbon power station from its podium roof.

Under an Energy Performance Contract, the performance of the co-generation plant, together with lighting and fit-out upgrades and the installation of new water efficient cooling towers, have been guaranteed to achieve the 5 star NABERS Energy rating.

GPT CEO and managing director, Michael Cameron, says the upgrades to 530 Collins Street were proof that a landmark building of such stature could also lead the market in terms of energy efficiency.

"The upgrades to 530 Collins ... have ensured it has maintained its market leadership position, remaining relevant to customers. Space in this high performing asset continues to be sought after by socially responsible, market leading tenants," he says.

"Delivering on GPT’s commitment to lead the industry in sustainable real estate, the recent upgrades to 530 Collins Street means the building is using 40 per cent less energy than a building of comparable size and age, saving 4,700 tonnes of carbon from being expelled into the atmosphere each year.

"530 Collins Street is arguably the most energy efficient Premium-Grade landmark building within the Melbourne CBD," Cameron says.

There are only four buildings in Melbourne which have achieved a 5 star NABERS Energy base build rating, including 800 Bourke Street and 818 Bourke Street buildings.
