Construction of Walker Corporation’s $280 million, 6 star Green Star commercial office development at 9-31 City West in Canberra has recently been completed by Leighton Contractors.

The project is one of the first new commercial office buildings in the country to feature a sustainable wall system created by Panelwall.

The 12-storey building comprises some 40,000 sqm of space and will be the new home to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

The interior fitout was designed by Woodhead Architects and has been designed to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Interiors rating tool.

The interior office space has been planned to achieve optimum flexibility, with the built office environment constructed to maximise natural light and views to the floorplates.

In response to Woodhead’s design philosophy, Panelwall developed a completely new demountable post and glazing system incorporating a glazed sliding door to maximise the use of external light through multiple layers of internal offices.

Over 455 offices and meeting rooms can be adapted from small to medium to larger spaces by simply adding, relocating or removing interconnecting walls. The system was designed with the minimum number of components and based on the modular planning grid setout by the design team.

Panelwall was able to minimise the number of typical wall panels and glazing panels to three different sizes while maintaining a single height over the whole 12 floors.

The Demountable Walling System used on the project features materials with high recycled content. Solid wall partitions have a recycled content of over 70 per cent and 100 per cent of its components are reusable and recyclable.

The modular system features a series of adaptable corner posts which allow for a diverse range of wall types, from solid walls, full height glazed walls and half glazed walls.
