Australian practice Terroir and Danish practice CF Møller have won Architectural Review’s 2016 MIPIM Future Projects Award for their design of the Acute Ward at New Hospital Bispebjerg in Denmark. Awards were given across 12 categories with Terroir and CF Møller winning in the Old and New category.
Along with engineering practices Alectia and Søren Jensen, Terroir and CF Møller were shortlisted in a design competition for Stage One of the $1.6 billion DKK (AUD$400 million) hospital project in 2014. The 66,500sqm project consists of 12 oblong buildings positioned around a central garden, which also serves as a healing and health-promoting tool.
The Acute Ward has been designed by Terroir and CF Møller and incorporates an emergency room, operating rooms and patient rooms. Designed to emphasise light, air and proximity to nature, the patient rooms feature transparent sliding doors to prevent isolation while the hallways serve as atriums, maximising the entry of natural light.
Both the design as well as the materials selected for the facades reference the original appearance of the hospital and the 1930s apartment buildings in the neighbourhood.
The awards were announced recently in Cannes, France by the London-based architecture magazine Architectural Review. Germany's BASF SE High-Rise Building by Eller + Eller Architekten was the overall winner.
