The transformation of 50 Martin Place in Sydney into a state-of-the-art workplace has been awarded a 6 Star Green Star – Office Design v3 rating.
Designed by Johnson Pilton Walker and BVN Donovan Hill, and delivered by Brookfield Multiplex, ARUP and MBM, 50 Martin Place is the largest heritage project in Australia to receive this rating. It was acquired by Macquarie Group in 2012 for its new global headquarters, with the refurbishment of 20,000sqm over nine existing levels enhancing its air, light, water and other amenities.
This included a complete overhaul of building services and systems, a new interior fitout and widening of the atrium, as well as construction of a new two-storey glass-domed roof and glass shuttle lifts integrated with the elegant heritage marble facades.
Internal stairways were constructed to provide greater interconnectivity and encourage collaboration between employees.
The building was originally constructed between 1925 and 1928, and is a rare Australian example of the American-influenced Inter-War Beaux-Arts style.
“50 Martin Place is now a sustainability showcase, and is further proof that heritage buildings can be upgraded to meet world leadership benchmarks in sustainability without their character being compromised,” says the Green Building Council of Australia's chief executive, Romilly Madew.
“Macquarie Bank has preserved a Sydney icon for future generations, while creating a productive, efficient and sustainable workplace for its people today.”
