Australian Life Cycle Assessment tools in focus at AusBuildLCA
Inaugural LCA conference tackles new systems of low carbon economy


Leading local and global experts in sustainable architecture and building will be part of the speaker program at the upcoming AusBuildLCA, the 1st Life Cycle Assessment Conference for Building and Construction in Melbourne.

Hosted by the Australian Life Cycle Assessment Society (ALCAS), AusBuildLCA opens with Joep Meijer, a US expert in sustainable strategies for the built environment, who will discuss the growing role of LCA in the global building and construction sector. Joep is owner and president of theRightenvironment in Austin, Texas, with more than a decade of experience, and has developed over a dozen evaluation tools, drafted national standards on footprinting and performed LCA studies for over 300 products.

The opening plenary will also feature Dr Dominique Hes, a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Architecture at the University of Melbourne, who will present on LCA and Designing for Hope. She recently co-authored the book, Designing for Hope: Pathways to Regenerative Sustainability.

Associate Professor Usha Iyer‐Raniga, the Deputy Head, International at the School of Property and Construction Management, RMIT University will share her experiences about leading the Sustainable Buildings and Construction (SBC) Programme under the 10YFP Framework on Sustainable Consumption and Production for the United Nations.

Alan Pears, one of Australia's leading energy efficiency experts, will share his thoughts on technology challenges and opportunities for sustainable buildings. A reputed specialist in sustainable energy and climate policy, he has worked in the sustainable energy and environment fields since the late 1970s, and been an expert adviser to federal, state and local governments across Australia. Alan was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2009 for his contribution to the environmental and energy policy

Nicole Sullivan, Technical Manager Sustainability at AusBuildLCA Bronze Sponsor BlueScope will share her experiences with the new Australasian EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) Programme.

VicRoads Project Manager for Climate Change (Mitigation and Adaptation) Simon Renton will highlight his work with the development of the Transport Authorities Greenhouse Group (TAGG) whole of life greenhouse methodology and subsequent Carbon Gauge tool, which has now been adopted by the Australian and New Zealand transport authorities as the default greenhouse estimation methodology for road construction projects.

The AusBuildLCA will be held in Melbourne on 26th and 27th November 2015.
