A new multi-residential development in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria references the past while looking firmly to the future.
Designed by The Architecture Company, The Bowery at 17 Ralph Street showcases a raw brick façade that draws inspiration from the area’s industrial history – and the brownstones of New York.
This dark face brickwork is offset by dark and off-white rendered exterior blades, as well as black-framed windows and doors.
Metal-clad upper levels complete the façade’s modern industrial aesthetic.
Inside, the industrial influences continue throughout the 25 apartments.
Playing with the heritage nature of the area, interior architects Allen Jack+Cottier (AJ+C) have curated a palette of distinctive materials.
Floors are finished in bold polished concrete and plywood is used throughout. Full-height glazing and glass louvres enhance the sense of space and light, and a choice of either pale or dark tones inspire accents in the kitchens and bathrooms.
Among the 25 apartments are a mixture of studios, one and two bedroom and two bedroom plus-study apartments.
Most offer a double-storey layout accommodating a private bedroom level above open-plan living areas which flow onto generous terraces or courtyards.
Shaded by a pergola, a communal landscaped rooftop provides a space for relaxing or working in the community garden.
Ralph Street and the surrounding streets are being rezoned and redeveloped, creating a high-growth residential corridor.
When complete, The Bowery will be a brief walk to local cafés, supermarkets, CBD buses and Green Square railway station.
The yet-to-be-completed nearby $8 billion Green Square Town Centre is set to transform Sydney’s oldest industrial heartland into a thriving, sustainable community and commercial centre.
