The old Cortlandt Street subway station in New York City that was completely reduced to rubble in the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center 17 years ago has now been reopened.
The reconstructed station was unveiled last weekend by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs the city’s subway system, just ahead of the 17th anniversary of the incident.
The $USD181 million reconstruction project has delivered a fully accessible station with elevator access from the street on its southbound platform, elevators for each platform from the mezzanine, and fewer columns, which will allow easier navigation for wheelchair users.
One of the design highlights is a mosaic by artist Ann Hamilton displaying text from the Declaration of Independence and the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
