Fifty-one projects were recognised at the 2014 Australian Institute of Architects’ Victorian Architecture Awards, announced on Friday 20 June at Central Pier in Docklands.

McBride Charles Ryan’s Dallas Brooks Community Primary School, a uniquely shaped building that reflects the fluid and rich journey needed for the early years of academic life, took home the night’s highest honour, the Victorian Architecture Medal.

Comprising a Primary School, Community Facilities and a Community Park, the school explores how new pedagogy methods may be reflected in various configurations of age-appropriate learning spaces. The development of small learning communities have been knitted together by shared outdoor courtyard spaces.

The project also won the Melbourne Prize and William Wardell Award for Public Architecture, while McBride Charles Ryan’s The Quays project was awarded the Marion Mahony Award for Interior Architecture as well as the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing Award.

The practice’s Community Hall (NGV Melbourne Now) also won the Small Project Architecture Award.

Kerstin Thompson Architects’ House at Hanging Rock was awarded the Harold Desbrowe-Annear Prize for Residential Architecture. Organising interior and exterior space and the extended site through a series of parallel bands, the house is defined by three terraces, staggered in plan and stepped down the site along a gentle diagonal.

All projects that received a named or architecture award will progress on to the 2014 National Architecture Awards.
