A new community and cultural precinct will be launched next week in the heart of the Green Square town centre in Sydney.
The City of Sydney’s new $32 million Green Square community and cultural precinct, which is built on the former South Sydney Hospital site on Joynton Avenue in Zetland, features a creative centre, community shed, childcare centre, park and public artwork.
Describing Green Square as one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in the country, lord mayor Clover Moore said they are focussed on developing it into a world-class urban centre.
The new cultural precinct development is part of the City’s $540 million commitment over the next 10 years to the Green Square town centre.
While the new childcare centre at the precinct will support the growing number of families choosing to live in the inner city, various creative and recreational facilities have been provided for people of all ages to come together, develop their talents and share ideas.
Key highlights of the Green Square community and cultural precinct include the Joynton Avenue Creative Centre designed by the award-winning Peter Stutchbury Architecture, which will offer artist studios, creative offices, exhibition spaces, workshop spaces and indoor and outdoor areas for community hire; the Banga Community Shed, which will include a repair café, where locals can develop new skills and learn about the benefits of repairing and reusing household items; and the Waranara Early Education Centre, designed by Fox Johnston Architects as a colourful and modern childcare centre featuring indoor and outdoor play spaces, a veggie garden, outdoor kitchen and digging patch.
Living up to its name, the Green Square cultural precinct will be powered by a new green infrastructure system and a water treatment facility will supply recycled stormwater for flushing toilets, green space irrigation and cooling towers.
The Green Square community and cultural precinct will be launched on Saturday 26 May 2018.
