First impressions are important, and for architects, the slick hair and tailored suit of their projects are presentations.

Presentations play a big role in the industry. From learning how to succinctly explain your project at university, to the ‘real world’ of professional work, all architects should be able to communicate their design and concepts to co-workers, clients, and even judges in a polished and precise manner.

After all, these presentations can sometimes be the deciding factor in whether a project gets approved or dismissed.

But, what makes a good presentation?

The obvious ‘always be prepared’ and ‘know your audience’ tips are gold and always relevant, but present-day technology means architects do not have to rely on watercolour or crayon paintings or illustrations to convey their ideas.

In fact, many have turned to architectural visualisation and video presentations to bring their projects to life.

These 3D presentations can be really sophisticated, and with special sound effects or advanced composition tricks, can help a project stand out.

Here are five examples of architectural video presentations:

1. Alan B. Miller Hall by Robert A.M. Stern

2. Lumion2011 competition winner, Garrett Wegner

3. Proposed design for the WA Kings Square architectural competition by McBride Charles Ryan
