Two Escea fireplaces were integrated into the design of a mid-century home in the suburbs of Yeronga, Queensland to provide a seamless flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Designed by grayHAUS Architects, the home has been transformed into a trans-seasonal sanctuary, where each space visually flows into the next. With nature as inspiration, the design brief called for ‘bold concrete elements softened with timber joinery, greenery and fire elements’, initiating conversation between the indoors and out.

The kitchen – the centrepiece of the home – features concrete ceilings and textured marble surfaces that bounce light throughout the room, highlighting the wooden accents to bring nature inside.

Aligned with the home's engagement with the elements, the architects have introduced an Escea fireplace indoors as well as outdoors to connect the two spaces in a seamless flow.

The Indoor Fireplace

Escea DS1400 fireplace

Placed in the lounge, the Escea DS1400 is visible from the kitchen to create the perception of an extended space. The fireplace in the indoor space combines art with earthy tones to create a sophisticated setting for adults to relax and connect, away from devices and distractions.

The Escea DS1400 linear gas fire was chosen for this space for its flexible installation and ease of use and maintenance. Positioned directly below the master bedroom, it makes use of Escea’s Flexible Flue technology that allows it to be flued horizontally rather than vertically.

The fireplace is built into a matte black render surround, carefully chosen to disappear into the room as well as to match the outdoor fireplace. The black render highlights the flames when the fireplace is on.

The Outdoor Fireplace

The outdoor entertainment area, just outside the kitchen and dining space, is framed in greenery and natural materials with a modern finish.

Escea EW5000 fireplace

The Escea EW5000 fireplace creates a dramatic focal point in the outdoor courtyard, and is visible from the open plan living area.

While the Queensland climate does not require an outdoor fireplace throughout the year, the architects included the Escea EW5000 in the Yeronga house as a statement feature that speaks to the earthy elements within the home.

The outdoor lounge is centred around the fireplace, taking in the flames, the lush greenery and the pool to create a tranquil, zen-like retreat in the suburbs, and a comfortable, warm place to relax in during the cooler months.

The EW5000 was chosen for its generous size, easy maintenance and cooking capabilities – perfect for a family that loves to entertain and feed a crowd.

The fireplace was easily installed atop a concrete plinth with an exposed flue, delivering a raw, rustic finish that adds warmth and soul to the outdoor space.
